American College of Emergency Physicians
May 19, 2014

The Amercan College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) honored an emergency physician for his outstanding efforts to communicate about emergency medicine issues on Monday.  The 2014 Spokesperson of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Howard Mell of Cleveland, Ohio at this year’s Leadership and Advocacy Conference in Washington, DC.

“In the past year, Dr. Mell has demonstrated great courage and a deep commitment to ACEP and the public relations agenda of the speciality of emergency medicine,” said Dr. Alex Rosenau, president of ACEP. “He is not only passionate about caring for patients, but has a gift at communicating that passion to the general public.”

Dr. Mell is an active member of ACEP’s Public Relations Committee.  He has been quoted in major news organizations including The Chicago Tribune, The New York Daily News, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, NBC News, ABC News and Fox News — to name a few.  Last year, Dr. Mell gave an interview to the Associated Press about emergency visits related to energy drinks. The story ran in 400 news organizations across the country.

ACEP is the national medical specialty society representing emergency medicine. ACEP is committed to advancing emergency care through continuing education, research and public education. Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, ACEP has 53 chapters representing each state, as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.
